When You Can't Switch Off: Rob Tracz on the Business Owner Burnout Trap
Business owner burnout is the state where a founder has been running in survival mode for so long that their nervous system no longer knows how to rest, even when the work stops. In this conversation, performance coach Rob Tracz and Roy Castleman explore why a business owner can't switch off once the pattern sets in, and what the path back to functioning like a full human being actually looks like.
In 2019, Rob Tracz was putting in seventeen-hour days, seven days a week. He had a growing coaching practice, a reputation for results, and absolutely no idea that he had stopped being a person somewhere along the way.
"I was in robot mode," Rob tells Roy on the Thinking Outside Your Brain podcast. "I had optimised every minute. My morning routine became my all-day routine. My calendar was consuming me, not the other way around."
That went on for three years.
The Morning Routine That Ate Everything
Rob's descent into burnout started with something that looked, from the outside, like discipline. He built a morning routine. Then he built a pre-morning routine. Then the routines started bleeding into every waking hour until there was no gap left between performance and personhood.
Roy recognises the pattern immediately. Before building the Owner's Thrive Method, he lived a version of the same thing. Revenue was climbing, but the human being generating it was disappearing.
Research backs this up. According to recent UK studies, roughly 60% of business owners report operating near or at burnout levels.
Why a Business Owner Can't Switch Off
The problem is not just psychological. Rob explains that when you run in sympathetic nervous system activation for months or years, your body loses the ability to shift back into rest mode. Fight-or-flight becomes the default setting, not the emergency response.
This is why the standard advice of "just take a break" fails so many business owners dealing with burnout. The break does not address what is happening underneath. You lie on a beach and your mind runs through the pipeline. You sit down to dinner with your family and you are mentally drafting tomorrow's email sequence.
From Robot Mode to a Complete 180
Rob shares the story of a client who came to him after years of the same pattern. Within a few months, this person did a complete 180. Not because they worked less, but because they learned how to be a human being again between the work.
The shift did not come from adding more structure. It came from subtraction. Fewer commitments. More space between meetings. Permission to do nothing for stretches of time without calling it laziness.
Roy connects this to his own experience with the health and recovery pillar. "The answer that nobody wants to hear is: slow down. Not forever. Not in a way that tanks your business. But enough that your nervous system remembers there is a person in there."
What Actually Works When You Are Running on Empty
Rob's practical advice is disarmingly simple. Start with five minutes of genuine stillness per day. Not meditation necessarily, not breathwork, not another optimised practice. Just five minutes where you are not producing, consuming, or planning anything at all.
"Most of my clients cannot do five minutes when they start," Rob says. "That tells you everything about how far into the pattern they are."
Roy puts it plainly: "If you are reading this and thinking you do not have time for five minutes of doing nothing, you are exactly the person who needs it most."
